Co Living Is Coming to York

Kosy Co Living sees York as a key area for co living and build to rent growth. Even though it isn’t a large area, it shows real promise for co living and build to rent projects...

Although York is a small city it is vibrant and energetic and home to around 203,000 people. An historic city, York’s workforce are recognised as being well-educated and an outstanding 88% of the workforce there are in the service industry. The reason for this high percentage is that York attracts a lot of tourists into the city, along with finance, technology, education and health sectors. York was the sixth most visited city in the UK between 2014-2016 and the majority of the tourists come to view the city’s historic attractions, such as York Minster and the medieval city walls.

York has the University of York and also York St John University and between the two there are nearly 30,000 students living here. Employment levels for these students when they leave university is high and because York is a National Science City the technology and science industry is thriving here. University based cities are key areas of focus for Kosy Co Living.

Research carried out by UNCLE, the rental company, found that York was listed as the second most desirable place to live in the UK, behind London. It featured higher than Manchester, Edinburgh and Liverpool, cities much larger than York. Given its desirability ranking so highly on reports, co living is required, we see it as a future co living hub.

First time buyers and renters find it difficult to afford good quality housing within the city. The suburbs are popular, such as Fulford and Clifton. Clifton is classed as one of the nicest places to live in York as the place has lots of restaurants, bars and shops. The schools are good here and the high demand means quality accommodation is scarce. There is a very good community feel about Clifton. Badger Hill is close to the University of York and both campuses are just a ten minute walk from here so it is popular with students giving the area a youthful buzz but it also an attractive area for young professionals, couples and families too. Fulford is another great suburb that really gives the area a community feel, with historic cottages nestled between modern homes. For the students Hull Road is normally their go-to destination for accommodation. Located close to the university, you can literally be in your lecture within ten minutes and the city centre is easily accessible, therefore students love this area.

There are 365 pubs in York, one for every day of the year so it isn’t surprising that students and the younger generations love to socialise in the city. Located within the medieval walls are plenty of clubs and shops and the size of the city means getting around everywhere is relatively quick and easy. Even though co living provides many on site facilities, the additional surrounding social hot spots makes it even more attractive to us as a co living area.

York used to be well known for its chocolate production, but this has changed in recent times. Young professionals flock to the city these days because of its diverse economy. The Sunday Times voted York the best place to live in 2018 and it was nominated again in 2020 a factor which caused young professionals to be drawn to the city. However this has caused house prices to increase in York, making it harder for many to find quality, affordable accommodation within the city centre. Kosy Co Living offers  just this. with all bills included, in purpose built accommodation that provides amenities that are similar to hotels.

The cost of living is suddenly a scary prospect for many people in the UK but a Kosy Co Living building can remove the worry of high monthly and fluctuating bills, as all bills, gym and amenities are included in the rent, a highly attractive consideration for future residents.
